SUMMARY:Being the Change
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn more about how you can be part of the solution for a more inclusive workplace and community!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nIn our intro session entitled Being the Change\, Renata and Faith lead a dialogue on ways we can work as organizations and individuals to create more inclusion and break down systemic racism that creates barriers to that inclusion. This session will include a brief overview of microaggressions and bias\, and the issues at play in the current climate. From there\, the conversation will move to actions and practices we can all take to create more inclusion\, address behavior that we know is stifling this progress\, and how we channel our focus into creating change. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFaith Tiemann has over 13 years of experience in higher education\, with 10+ years specifically working with and serving diverse populations\, both in solely higher education programs\, and in K-12 to Higher Education access programs. She is a trained facilitator in Intergroup Dialogue (University of Michigan model)\, the methodology of which this workshop has been created under. She received her undergraduate degree from Hartwick College\, and has her MBA with a focus in Global Brand Marketing and an Advanced Master’s Certificate in Higher Education Administration from Stony Brook University. \nAs a white woman\, Faith speaks from the perspective of the constant pursuit of allyship to marginalized communities\, and spends time both in her role as Director of Multicultural Student Initiatives at SUNY Oneonta and in her community engaging in conversations and education with folks from all identity groups on allyship and inclusion. Faith has presented at conferences in New York and Pennsylvania\, and provided a short series of workshops for female leaders with the Capstone on Campus Management company\, engaging with the methodology of Intergroup Dialogue and Common Ground. Additionally\, IncludED Perspectives has been featured on the PhotoSpark podcast. \nLocally\, Faith has presented for school counselors and teachers throughout the local districts\, students in grades 7-12\, college students at both SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College\, and for local business leaders through Leadership Otsego and the Otsego County Chamber of Commerce. As a graduate of a local k-12 rural district\, Faith is keenly aware of the lack of diversity within our school districts\, and therefore the great need to educate and communicate around issues of race\, allyship\, equity\, and inclusion. \nDr. Renata Williams is a seasoned education professional with more than 15 years of experience in higher education. Renata holds a bachelor of arts degree from Hartwick College\, a master of arts and a professional diploma from Manhattan College\, and a doctorate in education from The Sage Colleges. She started her career in enrollment management but has also held roles in academic affairs and student affairs. Renata is the Assistant Dean of Engagement and Inclusion and Director of Intercultural Affairs and Inclusive Programming at Lebanon Valley College in Annville\, Pa. \nRenata has spent her time in education intentionally working with students\, colleagues\, and peers to meet them where they are and assist in the learning process of diversity\, equity\, and inclusion. Although she has not always had a position that directly “required” the hard work of diversity\, equity\, and inclusion\, Renata has consciously made it part of her work regardless of title or job description.

SUMMARY:YouthBuild Class of 2018 Graduation
DESCRIPTION:View Graduation PhotosThe Social Enterprise and Training (SEAT) Center in Schenectady recognized forty young adults who have overcome educational and personal obstacles and completed SEAT’s career training programs. These graduates will now realize a future filled with bright career opportunities at companies throughout the Capital Region. These programs culminated in a special graduation and recognition ceremony on Tuesday\, February 26\, 2019 in the Carl B. Taylor Auditorium at SUNY Schenectady. \nThirty-three YouthBuild Schenectady @ SEAT program graduates donned caps and gowns and crossed the Commencement stage accompanied by Pomp and Circumstance and formally turned their tassels recognizing their graduation. An additional 7 students who have completed the Train Up @ SEAT program were acknowledged for successfully concluding construction and emergency medical technician career programs. All students were recognized for their commitment and dedication to personal and professional development. \nAlong with family\, friends\, SEAT alumni\, and sponsors\, the community was invited to attend the ceremony\, with keynote speaker Michael Parker. Michael serves as the Dean of Students and YouthBuild Program Coordinator at Youth Action YouthBuild East Harlem\, the site of the original YouthBuild program and birthplace of the international YouthBuild movement. \n“Graduation may have seemed unobtainable for YouthBuild Schenectady students\, yet today we share this significant milestone in our students’ journey. And for those participants enrolled in our workforce readiness programs\, today marks their entry into living-wage positions or the pursuit of additional education. This day celebrates academic and vocational achievements of those who have overcome hurdles and personal challenges to reach this goal. These students’ successes go beyond personal satisfaction and will have deep impacts on their families\, the SEAT Center community\, and the public at large.
